Background of the study
Digital content on social media platforms is rapidly reshaping traditional phonological norms in Nigeria. This study examines how TikTok and Instagram Stories serve as platforms for phonological variation by showcasing creative adaptations in pronunciation, intonation, and accent. Users on TikTok often incorporate musicality and rhythmic patterns into their spoken content, while Instagram Stories offer spontaneous, offthecuff vocal expressions that deviate from standard norms (Akinola, 2023). Such platforms provide users with the freedom to experiment with language, leading to the emergence of novel phonological patterns. The research investigates how these trends reflect broader social and cultural dynamics in Nigeria, where digital media is a potent catalyst for language change (Ibrahim, 2024). By comparing the phonological innovations across TikTok and Instagram Stories, the study seeks to understand the influence of digital communication on everyday speech and the evolution of phonetic practices in a technologically driven society (Okafor, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have become integral to Nigerian communication, there is insufficient research on how these platforms influence phonological variation. The dynamic and informal nature of audio content on these platforms poses challenges to traditional phonetic norms, yet the extent and nature of these variations remain underexplored. This study aims to bridge this gap by conducting a comparative analysis of phonological features in TikTok and Instagram Stories. The limited empirical data on this subject impedes a comprehensive understanding of digital phonetic innovation in Nigeria (Chinwe, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of phonological variation in Nigerian digital content. By focusing on TikTok and Instagram Stories, the research offers insights into how digital media fosters phonetic innovation, benefiting linguists, educators, and digital media researchers (Adebayo, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to analyzing phonological variations in TikTok and Instagram Stories within Nigerian digital discourse. It is limited to these platforms and does not extend to other social media or offline communication practices.
